Background of the Study
Pain management is a critical aspect of healthcare, aimed at improving patients’ quality of life and promoting recovery. Nurses play a pivotal role in assessing and managing pain, making their knowledge and attitudes toward pain management crucial determinants of patient outcomes (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023).
In many Nigerian healthcare facilities, including General Hospital, Maiduguri, suboptimal pain management practices have been attributed to insufficient knowledge and negative attitudes among healthcare providers (Audu et al., 2024). Misconceptions about pain, underestimation of patient suffering, and concerns about opioid addiction are common challenges that hinder effective pain management.
This study evaluates the knowledge and attitudes of nurses at General Hospital, Maiduguri, regarding pain management, aiming to identify gaps and recommend strategies for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Despite advancements in pain management, many patients continue to experience unrelieved pain due to inadequate interventions by healthcare providers. At General Hospital, Maiduguri, anecdotal reports suggest that nurses’ knowledge and attitudes toward pain management are influenced by factors such as limited training, cultural beliefs, and fear of opioid misuse.
The lack of empirical data on this issue hampers efforts to address these challenges. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of nurses in the hospital, providing insights into areas requiring intervention to enhance pain management practices.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess nurses’ knowledge of pain management at General Hospital, Maiduguri.
2. To evaluate nurses’ attitudes toward pain management and its impact on patient care.
3. To identify barriers to effective pain management practices among nurses.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of nurses’ knowledge of pain management at General Hospital, Maiduguri?
2. How do nurses’ attitudes toward pain management affect patient care?
3. What barriers hinder effective pain management practices among nurses?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses have varying levels of knowledge regarding pain management.
2. Positive attitudes toward pain management correlate with improved patient outcomes.
3. Identified barriers significantly impede effective pain management practices.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on nurses working in General Hospital, Maiduguri, and excludes other healthcare providers. Limitations include potential response bias and the exclusion of patient perspectives on pain management practices.
